Sword of Damocles
A bicolour parti sapphire from Scrub Lead in Queensland acts as the blade of this 18k gold sword pendant crafted by us. The pommel is adorned with a yellow diamond in a rounded trillion shape. The sapphire was bespoke cut for this project, into the shape of a sword. I designed the faceting pattern to taper to a point gently, without blending the two colours together keeping that beautiful bicolour intact. Being able to cut stones for a particular idea is one of my favourite parts of being a gem cutter.
The Sword of Damocles is a tale from ancient Greek philosophy that illustrates the dangers of power and the responsibilities that come with it. The sword encapsulates the tension between external appearances of success and the hidden challenges beneath. Representing growth, humility, and resilience in the face of challenges. The sword's ever-present danger can be interpreted as a warning against hubris or the unexamined pursuit of authority without understanding its true weight.
